Serena Works New York City During the U.S. Open

courtesy: usopen.org

Serena Williams was unable to play at the U.S. Open this year due to a foot injury but that did not stop her from watching her sister Venus play, commentating for ESPN with the McEnroe brothers, and taking in Fashion Night Out (FNO) events last week. She spent a lot of time with Vogue editor and fashionista Andre Leon Tally and was looking beautiful. She is good friends with Kim Khardashian and I think her latest hair style is looking very Khardashian-like.

ESPN Documentary: Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova

If you grew up loving the game and playing tennis because of Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova or merely appreciate the rivalry that elevated the athletic performance of these two outstanding athletes, check out a great ESPN documentary directed and produced by Lisa Lax and Nancy Stern Winters and co-produced by Hannah Storm.

Maria Sharapova's Journey Home

Really enjoyed this piece by ESPN following Maria Sharapova and her father Yuri to their home town in Russia several years after the Chernobyl nuclear accident. It gives you insight into why she has such a fighting spirit!

Fashionista Update

Nike's Maria Sharapova 2-piece summer collection is flirty with feminine details. We've already seen her sporting this 2-piece set during her matches in Cincinnati and San Diego - tournaments that are part of the U.S. Open Series. The set also comes in white and was worn by Julia Georges during Wimbledon. Nike describes the color here as filament green with Armory.
Her day-dress for the 2010 U.S. Open has a business-suit feel and certainly looks like she will be ready for business to go all the way for the title. Maria pulled out of Montreal after an injury sustained in the finals of Cincy and hopefully she'll be fully recovered to start the U.S. Open next week!

Congratulazoni Francesca!

Congratulations to first time Grand Slam Champion, Francesca Schiavone. Francesca defeated Sam Stosur (fresh off her impressive wins against Henin, Serena Williams, and Jankovic) to win the 2010 French Open title.

At age 29, she is a tour veteran who proved that skill, will, belief and a dream will get you very far. What a wonderful feel good sports story and history making win. She is the first female Italian tennis player to win a Grand Slam. Ben fatto!

Nadal Will Adorn Luxury Jewel at French Open

courtesy: www.rafaelnadal.com

This year, the King of Clay's return to the French Open will kick off in world class style. The four-time French Open champion looks to be in top form - ready to reclaim the title and will adorn a special edition watch designed for him by Richard Mille. The RM027 Tourbillon is a limited edition of 50 and retails at $525,000. The writstwatch (at this price can you call it a watch?) is made from materials used in space exploration and is one of the world's lightest wristwatches at 3.83 grams movement weight. I'm stunned at the value but when you play "out of this world tennis" like Rafa does, why not - the sky truly is the limit!

Martin Hingis Returns

Former world number 1 and 5 time Grand Slam Champion is considering a return to the WTA tour. She is scheduled to play at Wimbledon in a the "Legends" doubles tournament with Anna Kournikova, several exhibition matches, and a full World Team Tennis summer season with the New York Buzz. She said she would not rule out playing doubles on the WTA tour with good friend Lindsay Davenport. She never formally retired from tennis in 2007 after being suspended for a positive cocaine test and became eligible to play again in September 2009. Liezel Huber is also available since breaking up with long time doubles partner Cara Black. I think they'd make a great pairing.
